My name is Alex Rolland. When I was a toddler, I watched my parents get murdered by a man in a hood. I was then kidnapped and smuggled to the USSR, where I was made into someone else … into something else. Now I am back to Nigeria to avenge all those who have suffered, like me, at the hands of cruel, corrupt politicians. I am … The Nivenger!

Episode 9

The room was large and in a pristine state. It was also homely with exquisite furniture, a dining that had lots of fruits on it, and a TV as well with satellite. The room was also air-conditioned with a controller on the wall. With it, the temperature could be increased, whenever he felt hot, or reduced, whenever he felt a bit cold. There was a plush bed to one corner, which was bigger and infinitely softer than what he was used to back at the Institute. There was also a wardrobe with fresh comfortable clothes. The adjacent room was a bathroom where he took his bath and used the convenience.

Alex stood before the mirror on the inside of the wardrobe and looked at himself. His skin was fresh and smooth, unlike he had ever known since he was abducted and brought to Russia. For the past three weeks he had been in this prison, since the incident at the Nuclear Weapons Testing Facility, he had been kept here and fed well. He had eaten healthy and drank a lot of water. He was living the life, and he wondered if this was actually a prison or if he really wanted to return to the Institute.

Alex was sure he would have no problem breaking out of this prison. If he put his mind to it, he could. But he didn’t want to; or at least not just yet.

Since his three weeks of being imprisoned here, he was yet to be interrogated. The only contact he’d had was with the chef that brought him his meal at eight, four and nine every day for the past 21 days. He’d also seen the laundry lady three times in the past three weeks, when she came to exchange his beddings and give him fresh clothes. Alex was being treated like a prince, and he wasn’t sure he wanted this to stop. But he knew that today it would. Last night, the chef had said that some people were coming this afternoon by twelve to see him. It was about that time now. Alex was expecting visitors, and they would determine what happened to him next. Alex had sworn he would never reveal the secrets of the Institute. His story was that he had infiltrated the terrorist cell as a personal vendetta against them for all the harm they had done to Mother Russia, and in so doing he had inadvertently stumbled upon their plans to procure a nuclear weapon. He had stopped them. Alex knew he wasn’t in trouble—on the contrary, he was a hero and he was going to play that card. His captors knew he was a hero as well; if they didn’t, they wouldn’t have imprisoned him in paradise.

There was a knock on the door. Alex went and opened it. Then he staggered back and gasped. Standing side by side in the hallway was the Minister of Defense of Russia and the Dean of the Institute. The Dean was a lean and fierce looking man, whereas the Defense Chief was a potbellied old man whose eyes burned with wisdom and cunning.

The Deal said, “Alex, I believe you know Mikhail Ivanovich?”

Alex snapped to attention. “Yes, Dean. Minister of Defense, sir!”

Ivan waved for Alex to calm down. “There’s no need for that, son. I came here to personally deliver the gratitude of the President for your great service to this country.” He walked into the room with the Dean in tow. They all sat at the dining.

When they were all settled in, the Dean said, “You’ve done great work here, Alex, and I am glad to announce that you have been promoted. Not only did you kill Al-Hassid, you also stopped a nuclear attack on Russian soil which we could never have thought the terrorists were capable of.”

“Indeed,” Ivan said, beaming at Alex with pride. “The entire politburo and everyone who matters in our political landscape know of your great deed. You are a hero in the corridors of power in Russia. Surely, you have a mighty great future ahead of you. This is why I am here.” Ivan glanced at the Dead, “The president wants to be kept abreast of this fine man’s progress.”

The Dean bowed a head. “It is my pleasure to inform the president, sir.”

Ivan said, “It’s pretty clear what happened at our secret facility. But there is one little detail that bothers us…” Ivan glanced for the Dean to continue.

The Dean said, “How did the terrorist know that we were operating a secret Nuclear Weapons Testing Facility in the small village just outside Moscow? Only a handful of people in Defense and the entire government know about that.”

Alex nodded. “We have a mole.”

Ivan said, “No, my young boy. If it were a mole, it would be better. A mole would be working for the CIA or the SAS. No, we have a terrorist—a wolf in sheep’s clothing.”

“One we need to cut out as soon as possible before we are compromised again,” the Dean said to Alex. “Because he will not stop until we are destroyed.”

Alex said, “I don’t understand. Why are you telling me this?”

Ivan rested into his chair. “The same reason why we have kept you here and fed you well. We are getting you ready.”

Alex frowned. “Ready for what?”

The Dean had a very serious look on his face. “You are going to find the mole and you’re going to kill him, no matter who he or she is in the government. For Russia.”

Ivan nodded. “For Russia.”

Alex said, “What if it’s a secretary or a member of the politburo? Is this mission even sanctioned?”

The Dean shook his head. “It’s not, Alex. And you can choose not to accept it. But you’re the best person at the Institute, and we can’t risk using a KGB or GRU agent. We don’t know how deep this cancer spreads in our government. We need to be careful…”

“So, what exactly am I to do?” asked Alex.

Ivan pulled out his phone and made a call. “Masha? Come in.”

The Dean said, “We have put together a small group of skilled operatives your own age. Some of them are from our Institute, some are from other establishments similar in some ways to ours…”

At that moment, the door opened and the most beautiful girl Alex had ever seen in his life waltzed into the room. She was tall, young, and extremely $3xy. Alex felt his heart actually tremble as she walked past him to the Defense Chief. She hugged the man and said, “Hello father.”

Masha nodded at the Dean and smiled at Alex. Her smile was so sweet he felt a violent jerk in his heart. His breathing raced as he became smitten by Masha.

Masha was a raw and startling beauty. She was blonde and had a shocking deep blue eyes. Her voice was like that of an angel and there was a power, elegance, and exoticness to her persona.

“Masha, meet Alex,” Ivan said. “Alex, meet Masha, my daughter.”

Masha sat right next to Alex and put forth her hand for a handshake, smiling ever so sweetly. “Hi, Alex. I heard about what you did. I am impressed!”

Alex tried to talk, but found out his mouth was dry. He coughed and took her hand. He managed to say, “Thanks.”

Masha and Alex held gaze and hands for a tad bit longer than necessary.

The Dean cleared his throat, causing them to break contact. “The two of you are going to lead this small team we are assembling. You’re going to have unrestricted access to all you need to carry out this mission, including to me, the SecDef, and the President.”

“But know this,” Ivan said. “Your operation, should you choose to accept it, is illegal, and if found out we will disavow any knowledge of you or your actions. Agreed?”

Masha looked at Alex again. Alex nodded at her, feeling a blossoming in his heart.

Masha looked between the Dean and her father. “When do we start?”

“Before we begin on that,” the Dean said, looking at Alex. “I have a reward for you for stopping the nuclear attack.” He rose to his feet and said, “Follow me.”

Alex followed the Dean out of the room into a long hallway. As they walked, Alex said, “Forgive me, Dean, but how is Masha going to help me find this leak? She isn’t an operative.”

The Dean said, “Alex, Masha is one of the strongest, most skilled assassins I have ever known. Don’t let her charm, sweetness, or privileged upbringing fool you. I wouldn’t bet against her so quickly in a fight with you.”

Alex frowned. “You’re saying she can defeat me?” he said with a disbelieving tone.

The Dean scoffed. “I’m saying you may be equally matched or she may be better. And I’m talking from my three years old knowledge of her. She has definitely improved her technique.”

They stopped in front of another door similar to his.

The Dean said, “Go in. And take your time. When you’re done, come meet us in the other room and we can brief you on how we take down this traitor.” He turned and walked back.

Alex opened the door and walked into the room. It was an exact replica of his room. This time there was a man and a woman sitting on the sofa looking at the TV. The moment Alex walked in, they stood up and looked at him.

“Alex?” said the woman.

Tears blurred Alex vision. “Mom? Dad?”
